Missouri Leave Law Snapshot
Use this snapshot as a quick employer-facing overview. A “No Broad Mandate” result does not mean leave is never available. Employers should also review federal law, company policy, ADA, workers’ compensation, payroll, benefits, and documentation practices.
Missouri Employer Leave Law Overview
Missouri employers should review leave requests through multiple lenses, including federal FMLA, state-specific leave requirements, employer handbook policies, ADA accommodation, workers’ compensation, payroll coordination, benefits continuation, and return-to-work documentation.
Federal FMLA
Applies to covered employers and eligible employees. Review eligibility, notices, certification, designation, tracking, benefits, and return to work.
State Paid Family Leave
Missouri does not currently have a broad statewide private-sector paid family leave mandate. Review FMLA, employer policy, PTO, STD, and unpaid leave practices.
Paid Sick Leave
Missouri had a voter-approved earned paid sick time law in 2025, but state legislation repealed the statewide paid sick leave mandate effective August 28, 2025. Review current law, any accrued-use transition issues, handbook language, payroll setup, and attendance practices.
Jury Duty Leave
Missouri prohibits employers from disciplining employees because of jury summons or service and does not allow employees to be required to use vacation, personal, annual, or sick leave for jury duty time.
Voting Leave
Missouri employees may be entitled to up to three hours off to vote if they do not have three successive nonworking hours while polls are open; advance request and employer scheduling rules apply.
ADA / Accommodation
When FMLA ends or does not apply, employers may still need to evaluate ADA reasonable accommodation and interactive process obligations.
Missouri Leave Complexity Score
Moderate Complexity
Missouri leave administration may appear straightforward, but employers should pay close attention to FMLA, ADA, workers’ compensation, jury duty, voting leave, military leave, payroll, benefits, documentation, and handbook consistency.
Missouri Leave Law Category Review
Use this table as a quick employer-facing guide. A “No Broad Mandate” result means the state may not currently have a broad statewide private-sector requirement in that category.
